Region: Mendoza
Mendoza is by far the biggest and most significant wine growing region in Argentina. The area is responsible for about 70% of Argentina's production of wine.
It has a dry, continental climate caused by dry winds coming from the Andes mountain range to the west. Wine making in this climate would be impossible if it weren't for irrigation. Water from the Mendoza river is distributed to the vineyards through a centuries old network of canals. Still, less than 4% of the area is cultivated, the rest is desert.
The altitude of the are varies between 600 m./2000 ft. in the east to 1200 m./4000 ft. in the west. Malbec is the primary red grape varietal used, but also Cabernet Sauvignon is planted. In cooler areas Chardonnay is used for white wines.
