Region: Pessac-Léognan
The best part of the Graves region used to be called "Haut-Graves". In 1987 it got its own appellation called Pessac-Léognan. Most of the wine it produces is red, but also some white wines are produced.
Pessac-Léognan has its own classification: wine can be "Grand Cru Classé" or not. the last revisin of the classification took place in 1959. The classification concerns wines, not wineries; 13 red wines are classified and 8 white wines. Only 2 Château's were classified for both their red and white wines (Carbonnieux and Bouscaut).
Haut Brion was the only wine from Graves that already got the highest classification in the 1855 Bordeaux classification: 1er Grand Cru.
The reds are made from a Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot-Cabernet Franc blend, like the Médoc, and in fact bear some resemblence to these wines. What sets this region apart is their efforts on the white wines: The Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc based dry wines are very good.
