Pauillac is home to many great wines. 3 out of 5 of the classified 1st growths (1er Grand Cru) are from Pauillac: Lafite-Rothschild, Latour and (since 1973) Mouton-Rothschild.To many people, Pauillac shows the essence of Bordeaux: Impressive wines, although often expensive, with beautiful fruit and hints of cedarwood.
The soil in Pauillac consists of mainly gravel. The blends are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and sometimes Petit Verdot. There are great variations in the style of the wines from different wineries due to differences in terroir and wine making process.
