Region: St. Julien
St. Julien is a small commune situated just south of Pauillac. Although none of the wines are classified as 1er Grand Cru, no less than 5 wines have the 2ème Grand Cru status (second growth). And they are worth it. Arguably the best of them is Château Léoville las Cases, the neighbor of Château Latour in Pauillac. It is often mentioned as a candidate for promotion to 1er Grand Cru in the very unlikely event of a revision of the 1855 classification. Price levels of the wine would absolutely justify this.
St. Julien is a very reliable appellation, almost all of the wines from St. Julien are of high quality. The three Léoville château's (Léoville las Cases, Léoville Barton, Léoville Poyferré) are all situated along the bank of the Gironde river, an ideal location. Another group of Chateau's is situated just south of them, around the town of Beychevelle.
The wines are made from mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with Merlot and sometimes Cabernet Franc.
