Region: Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Chateauneuf-du-Pape is famous for their red wines, although they also produce some white wines. The soil consists of yellow to red earth, sometimes covered by a layer of round stones called "Galets". They are said to absorb the heat during daytime, giving warmth back to the vine during nighttime.

Most Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines are a blend of Grenache with up to 12 other grape varieties such as Mourvèdre and Syrah. They usually need a couple of years to develop and can be cellared for at least 10 years.
Besides the "normal" Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines, some wineries started to create a super-wine of selected vineyards and selected grapes, sometimes only in superb vintages. Examples are Cuvée da Capo from Domaine du Pégaü, Deus ex Machina from Clos Saint Jean and Hommage à Jacques Perrin from Château de Beaucastel. These wines are marked by an extreme concentration and high alcohol levels. Not surprisingly, they tend to get high ratings from Robert Parker. Many other producers outside the Rhône valley have adopted this principle and created a super-wine that helped to improve the winery's image and helped to create the publicity that comes with high ratings.
