Region: Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch was founded in 1679 by the Governor of Cape Colony, Simon van der Stel, who named it after himself. Stellenbosch is a university city with a population of over 110.000. Tourist will recognize this city by the typical Dutch style houses from around 1600. The Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek valleys form the Cape Winelands, the larger of the two main wine growing regions in South Africa.
The region has a Mediterranean climate. The summers are a little bit warmer than the Bordeaux region in France. Especially to the north, a little further from sea, the temperatures can be much higher. The climate is considered to be ideal for winemaking. There is enough rain (annually 740mm, during the harvest month March 30mm). Stellenbosch elevation is 136 M (446 ft). To the east lies the Simons mountain 1000 meter and to the south the Jonkershoek Maintains 1494 meters.
Blends have been very popular in this region for a long time, resulting in the name Cape Blend. Popular grapes in the region are: Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz ,Merlot and Pinotage.
