Region: Napa Valley
Napa Valley can be divided into 3 zones that each have a different climate.
The southernmost part, Los Carneros and the area around Napa City up to Yountville, has a lot of fog, which reduces the temperature and the amount of sunlight the region gets. This area is very suitable for white grapes and cool climate red grapes such as Pinot Noir, but also Merlot.
The central zone, from Oakville via Rutherford to St. Helena, also gets some of the fog but usually only in the afternoon. This part is warmer, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the most important grapes used here.
North of St. Helena up to Howell mountain is the higher part of the valley and because the fog does not reach this area so much, it gets most of the sunshine. Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Petite Syrah are the main grapes used here.
