Region: Willamette Valley
Wine making in Willamette Valley started in the late 1960's by planting of Pinot Noir vines by David Lett of Eyrie Vineyards. The climate in Willamette is cool: Similar to but a fraction cooler than the Côte d'Or in Burgundy, France. This is ideal for Pinot Noir, but also for white grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Gewürztraminer.
The area has attracted investors from well known wineries around the world, including the Burgundy wine house Drouhin. But the majority of wineries are small "boutique wineries" that concentrate on quality and focus on the character of the individual vineyard.
