Region: Columbia Valley
Columbia Valley is an arid area. It is sheltered by the Cascade Range to the east, which draws heavy rainfall from the moist Pacific air. Wine making in this area would be impossible without irrigation. It was only during the 1950's that people started building irrigation systems to make wine making possible. The first wine was produced in 1966.
Heavy frosts during the winter are a big risk to the vines. The frost can be so severe that is kills the wood of the vine. The roots survive however, and after the dead wood is removed the vine starts to grow again. This results in a very small harvest the following year, but the third year after the freeze can a normal harvest again.
Most wines produced in Columbia are blends. Even "single varietal" wines contain up to 25% of other grapes. Merlot is used a lot, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon and, recently, Syrah. For the white wines, Chardonnay and Riesling are the most widely planted grapes.
Yakima Valley and Walla Walla Valley are important sub-AVA's that produce high quality wines.
