Region: Yakima Valley
Yakima valley is a sub-AVA in Columbia Valley. It is surrounded by the Rattlesnake Mountains to the north and Horse Heaven Hills to the south. Wine making in this area would be impossible without irrigation. It was only during the 1950's that people started building irrigation systems to make wine making possible. Yakima Valley was the first place in Columbia Valley to make wine in 1967.
The climate in Yakima Valley tends to be more temperate than the rest of Columbia Valley AVA.
