Bordeaux is often divided into left bank wines (Médoc) and right bank wines (Libournais). The majority of wines are red wines being made from a blend of several grapes. For the left bank, the wines are made from mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and a smaller percentage of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, right bank wines are mostly dominated by Merlot with smaller percentages of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
In 1855, a classification of the Médoc wines took place which has remained unchanged up till today (apart from 1 change in 1973). It divides the wines into 5 classes. The best class is 1er Grand Cru (or "First growth'), then goes down to 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Grand Cru. Something to note is that it does not actually classify the individual wines or the vineyards, but rather the Château's, or owners of the vineyards. Even if a Château buys a vineyards that was previously not classified, they can still make a classified Grand Cru from that vineyard.
Despite the fact that the classification happened a long time ago and that many vineyards have changed ownership since, it is still fairly accurate. Some Château's do not exist any more and some produce wines that are not worth their classification. But only a few Château's that were not in the classification of 1855 now actually deserve to be in there.
The left-bank wines were not part of this classification. Instead, St. Emilion has created its own classification, which is being revised on a regular basis. Some of the best left bank wines are from Pomerol. Pomerol does not have a classification. The most expensive wine of Pomerol (Pétrus) just mentions "Grand vin" (great wine) on its label. So it is hard to judge the quality of a Pomerol wine from the label, but usually the price tag is a pretty good indication.
Besides the red wines, the Sauternes region is famous for it's sweet white wines. They tend to be very rich in flavor thanks to the "noble rot" (Botrytis) of the grapes, mostly Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc.
Unfortunately, the quality image of Bordeaux is only true for a relatively small percentage of the wines that Bordeaux is producing nowadays. Many of the normal Bordeaux wines have a hard time competing with with low cost wines from other regions.
