Red: 97%, White: 2%, Rosé: <1%The Côte de Nuits is famous for its red wines from Pinot Noir, although some white wines are made as well. The red wines in general seem to have a bit more concentration and aging potential than the reds from the southern part of the Côte d'Or: Côte de Beaune.
The Côte d'Or has such big differences between vineyards and their terroir that it is split up in tiny parcels that each have a distinct name. Depending on the quality of the soil, the orientation towards the sun and the microclimate, a vineyard gets a specific classification.
- A generic Bourgogne can come from anywhere in the Bourgogne region, or be a mix of different villages.
- When the village name is mentioned, the wine is made from grapes just from that village. The "Lieu-dit" wines mention not only the village the grapes come from but also the individual vineyard
- Next in level are the Premier Cru wines. They mention the name of the village and often the name of the Premier Cru vineyard, unless it is a blend of several Premier Cru vineyards, in which case only the village name is given.
- The highest level is Grand Cru. The labels tend to mention just the name of the vineyard, for instance "Bonnes Mares". The rest of the information (such as that it is a Bourgogne wine from the village Chambolle Musigny) is considered to be too obvious to mention.
The region has depended on wine making for centuries. Most of the land is owned by families that have several plots of land spread over several villages. You will not find impressive estates from big corporations here: most of the wine making happens on a small scale.

Plowing the ground like they did centuries ago in the "Aux Murgers" vineyard in Nuits-St-Georges
Also the techniques used are still ancient, both on the land and in the cellar. The small scale on which wine making happens sometimes means that the wine gets all the attention that it needs to create a fantastic product. But at the same time, it means that the quality of the wine largely depends on the wine maker. The classification does not take this into account. The Grand Cru Clos Vougeot has around 80 owners. Some make a wine that is worth its Grand Cru status, but some just profit from the fact that "Grand Cru" on the bottle means it will sell at a high price, regardless of the quality of the wine itself. So even though a vineyard may have the potential of producing great wines, the wine maker is sometimes more important than the vineyard.
