It does not put many restrictions on grape varieties, vineyards yields or geography. As a result, the quality and character of wines from Toscana IGT varies widely. If they have a common denominator, it would be the style of ripe, concentrated wines with a fairly high alcohol level, made to satisfy an international public rather than to express the terroir of the vineyard.
Toscana IGT is mostly known as the home of the "Super Tuscans": Wines of great quality that for some reason do not fit the prescriptions of a DOC or DOCG. Many are made from (blends with) the indigenous grape Sangiovese, but quite a few include the "Bordeaux" varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
