Red - Fortified: 58%, Red: 28%, White - Fortified: 6%, White: 4%, Rosé: <1%, White - Sparkling: <1%, White - Sweet/Dessert: <1%, other types: <1%Douro has always been known for the production of Ports. In the past, little dry table wines was produced, unimportant in terms of quality and quantity. Barca Velha was the only exception: a famous dry table wine from the Douro.
The change began after Portugal became member of the European Union. Under E.U. legislation, ports could not only be produced by port shippers in Oporto: Production companies (Quinta's) could make port wines and export them themselves. Also, the area became open to new companies. Dry red wines gained in quality considerably during the 90's. Currently, some Quinta's are even more famous for their dry table wines than for their ports, which they often still produce: for instance Quinta do Crasto and Quinta do Vale Meão.
Douro wines tend to be concentrated and fruity and often surprisingly complex. Vary little white wines are produced in Douro due to the hot climate; Niepoort probably being the exception with white wines grown at an altitude higher than 400 m.
