Red: 98%, Rosé: 1%, White: <1%Until the 1970s, Ribera del Duero was dominated by a single producer: Vega Sicilia. Their "Unico" wine was created with the Bordeaux in mind, based mainly on Cabernet Sauvignon blended with Garnacha and Tempranillo. This wine is matured in wooden casks for 10 years before its release to the market.
In the 80s and 90s other producers started making high quality wines in the region (starting with Alejandro Fernández of Pesquera). These wines were not based on the Cabernet but on the Tempranillo grape, locally known as Tinto Fino or Tinto del País. The style of the wines were more fruit-driven as opposed to the classical Rioja style of wine making. The success of these winemakers led to the recognition of the Ribero del Duero as a high quality wine region. Some leading wineries now produce top wines like Aalto P.S. and the cult wine Pingus.
