Red: 93%, White: 3%, Rosé: 1%, White - Sweet/Dessert: 1%Toro has been a wine producing region for centuries. Until recently, the wines were known for reasonable quality and price. Toro received the status of D.O. (Denominación de Origen) in 1987.
Since then, quality got a lot of attention in the region. The main grape used is Tinta de Toro, a clone of Tempranillo that is smaller and therefore produces red wines with more color and tannins. It is sometimes blended with Garnacha (Grenache).
Some wineries create extremely concentrated, jammy, dark wines with a lot of (soft) tannins, suitable for cellaring for decades. For example Numanthia and Termanthia by Bodega Numantia Termes. Other wineries make wines that are less jammy but still strong and full-bodied, and a lot more affordable. Toro is a region worth following, with excellent value wines, but still in the shade of big names like Rioja and Ribera del Duero.
