Red: 88%, White: 9%, Rosé: 1%, White - Sweet/Dessert: <1%, Red - Sweet/Dessert: <1%Priorato, or Priorat in Catelan, is a small but significant wine region on the east coast of Spain. Although people have been making wine in that region for centuries, it is only recently that is has attracted the attention of many wine lovers.
The region used to make insignificant wines, often blended with wines from other regions. In 1989 however, a group of 5 wine makers changed the history of the region: René Barbier (Clos Mogador), Carles Pastrana (Clos de L’Obac), Josep Lluís Pérez (Mas Martinet), Daphne Glorian (Clos Erasmus) and Alvaro Palacios (L’Ermita). They found the soil and climate perfect to make very concentrated, high quality wines. This could only be achieved by making drastic changes in the production process of the wines (low yields in the vineyards and improvements in the wine making process).
As a result, Priorat wines are now known for intensely colored, very powerful wines. The sometimes over 100 year old Cariñena (Carignan) and Garnacha (Grenache) vines give extremely low yields of less than 10 hL/hA. This leads to wines which are very concentrated and are sometimes mistaken for New World wines.
Priorat is the second wine region in Spain (after Rioja) to qualify as DOCa, the highest qualification level for a wine region according to Spanish wine regulations.
