The Winery
Agricola Centolani is a world-famous wine estate located in the heart of Montalcino, one of the most evocative villages in legendary Tuscany. Brunello di Montalcino, one of the world’s top wines, grows here in the Siena area, amid Valle d’Arbia’s stark landscape and Valle d’Orcia’s wild, sunny stretches. The Peluso Centolani family owns the homonymous company and possesses two major wine estates in Montalcino: Tenuta Friggiali, with cellars and offices, and Tenuta Pietranera, whose vineyards, olive groves, arable land and woods cover approximately 200 hectares.
Our Vineyards
Tenuta Friggiali is to be found on Montalcino’s southwest
slope, and its vineyards drop from 450 to 200 meters down to a vast
plain dotted with cypresses, centuries-old villas and fascinating
castles (the most famous of which is Poggio alle Mura, dating back to
the 13th century). Cultivated entirely with Brunello, implanted with
Sangiovese clones, Tenuta Friggiali’s vineyards cover
approximately 20 hectares. They are broken up into three main
blocks, each with a different traditional name. The first large
vineyard that visitors encounter to the right when travelling down
the road from the top is called Pietrafocaia. Eight hectares in the
shape of a giant sleeping on his side, it is thus named because of
the firestone which characterises this vineyard whose grapes, made
into wine according to the tradition of single vineyards, produce a
fulcoloured and heavy-bodied wine. Along the road through the
vineyards, named “the Maremmana”, Friggiali’s
vineyards encompass the cellar, the modern offices and the small,
refined Relais that, with the passing of time, has received numerous
wine-lovers, nowadays synonymous with love for nature and
unpretentiousness, namely love for mankind. The name Friggiali
probably derives from the popularisation of the Latin Frigidi meaning
“fresh and ventilated” and it is curious to note how the
old toponymy of this area reflected the peculiarity of each
individual vineyard. Actually, in Friggiali more than elsewhere, wind
dries vines after rainfall protecting them against dreaded oidium.
The cru called Poggiotondo can be seen from the hilltop next to the
manor’s house. It is the southernmost one of Tenuta Friggiali,
its vineyards lie on a plain at the foot of the estate and are
particularly luxuriant and flourishing.
